ABOUT THE EVENT
Providing patients with high-quality essential medicines requires a well-functioning procurement, distribution, and regulatory system. However, in many low- and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs), the centrally run supply chain is unable to provide health facilities with uninterrupted supply leading to frequent stockouts at health clinics. Decentralized purchasing of essential medicines by health facility themselves can provide greater autonomy to health facilities in managing their medicine stock, and as a result could reduce essential medicine stockouts. On the other hand, direct purchasing of medicines comes with risks related to price, quality, and procurement transparency. This event will present currently available evidence on the impact of decentralized purchasing on medicine availability, price, and quality. It will then explore the pre-requisites for decentralized purchasing of medicines and health products to succeed as a viable recourse mechanism when the nationally run medicine supply chain fails to deliver.
