Governments across the world are grappling with rising debt loads, prompting them to cut spending and increase revenue. Raising government revenue is critical for the fiscal sustainability of developing countries, but increasing tax rates or coverage has implications for the poor and income inequality. In numerous cases, civil society organizations have advocated for reforms geared towards fostering more equitable tax frameworks.
This event will draw insights from recent civil society-led tax reform campaigns in seven countries, chronicled in the recently published book, A Taxing Journey: How Civil Actors Influence Tax Policy. The case studies showcase the diverse approaches and strategies adopted by civil society groups and underscore the potential for enhanced collaboration among civic actors, governments, and donors to foster fairer tax regimes.
