ABOUT THE EVENT

Indian agriculture is trapped in a low-level equilibrium with small farm sizes and low farmer incomes. Excessive regulation and the market power of intermediaries are commonly blamed for blocking new entrants into the supply chain and reducing the share of the consumer's rupee that reaches farmers. In this talk, Shoumitro Chatterjee, Assistant Professor of Economics at Penn State, will reexamine these conclusions and summarize his research on the role of India's agricultural markets in determining farmer incomes.
