More than two years after we saw the end of a deadly Ebola epidemic that claimed the lives of over 11,000 people and devastated populations in West Africa, new mechanisms have been pursued to strengthen preparedness efforts, stimulate innovation for new vaccines and therapies, and develop rapid and comprehensive response strategies. But how equipped are we to address new Ebola threats?
This discussion moderated by Reid Wilson, author of Epidemic: Ebola and the Global Scramble to Prevent the Next Killer Outbreak, Dr. Oliver Johnson and Ambassador Sinead Walsh, co-authors of Getting to Zero: A Doctor & A Diplomat on the Ebola Frontline, will recount their experiences on the ground in Sierra Leone during the height of the Ebola epidemic. CGD’s Jeremy Konyndyk, who helped to lead the US response to the outbreak, will examine the policy and operational lessons learned that emerged from that effort; and Carleigh Krubiner will reflect on the development and delivery of an efficacious Ebola vaccine, and how current approaches can perpetuate the exclusion of a group desperately in need of protection: pregnant women.
