CGD TALKS

In Conversation with Wellcome’s New CEO—John-Arne Røttingen: Can Science and Diplomacy Revitalise Global Health?

FEATURING

John-Arne Røttingen, Chief Executive Officer, Wellcome

MODERATING

Pete Baker, Deputy Director, Global Health Policy Program and Policy Fellow, CGD

Global health is in a fragile state: domestic and donor resources are stagnating, the global health architecture is widely considered not fit for purpose, and resources and attention are being diverted to other crises such as climate change, multilateral development bank reform, and regional conflict.

It was in this challenging context that the Wellcome Trust announced the appointment of John-Arne as its new CEO. John-Arne leads a £1.7 billion annual programme of research and policy engagement at Wellcome. He brings a unique perspective to the role, combining research and diplomacy—as a former research scientist, research commissioner, the CEO of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, an ambassador for Norway, and the co-chair of the Future of Global Health Initiatives.

Join CGD for a conversation between John-Arne and Pete Baker, CGD’s Deputy Director of Global Health, to gather insight into the present state of play in global health, what John-Arne sees as the key future priorities in global health, what he hopes to achieve at Wellcome, and how he will balance science and diplomacy at one of the world’s oldest and largest global health philanthropies.

The in-person audience to this event is invitation only.
