Francis Mangeni, CGD Non-Resident Fellow; Former Director of Trade, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa

Is it time to start work on the Common African Market? If so, who are the key stakeholders for the Common African Market, and what are their roles? The emergence of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will be transformative. What does that mean for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and bilateralism at large?

To promote broad stakeholder engagement in addressing these questions and the deep-seated challenges in advancing regional economic integration, CGD’s Africa Initiative, the AfCFTA Secretariat, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will host the first of a four-part working group series on a Common African Market. This first working group seminar will be moderated by CGD Senior Fellow Gyude Moore and Non-Resident Fellow and Former Director of Trade at the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, Francis Mangeni. The first working group webinar will discuss the nature, the state of play, and the performance of the AfCFTA.

At the culmination of this series, there will be a hybrid event at the CGD office in Washington, D.C., to commemorate, summarize, and drive attention to the policy recommendations of the group in pushing forward a Common African Market.
