Ending Violence in Schools

Children and adolescents are exposed to shockingly high levels of violence in schools, including physical, psychological and sexual violence perpetrated by peers and the school staff. Violence affects children's access to inclusive and safe educational environments and is associated with adverse effects on a wide range of life outcomes, from educational participation and cognitive and socio-emotional development to longer-term impacts on mental health and earnings.​

We need to better understand the magnitude of the problem, improve the measurement of violence, understand the determinants and consequences of violence, and generate more evidence on the policies and interventions that create safe school environments. The CGD Education program is conducting new research to address these research gaps and encourage action to eliminate violence in and on the way to or from school.
