Maybe it’s some kind of spring fever, but CGD is in events overdrive in the next couple of weeks, spurred on by the World Bank / IMF Spring Meetings, and the plethora of discussions they bring. So we thought it would be helpful to give you a handy guide to the insightful, provocative events that we will be holding.
As this year is also CGD’s 15th anniversary, we are making extra efforts to host great discussions on substantive issues with key figures, in our special Development Leaders series, and we are delighted to be pairing up with, and hosting, some big names in the coming weeks. You may already have received invites to some of the events below; if not, you can sign up from this page.
CGD senior fellow Liliana Rojas-Suarez hosts some of the brightest minds on Latin American economics including four former finance ministers in our twice-yearly conference of CGD’s Latin American Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee (Spanish acronym CLAAF). The conference culminates in a public event, which this year offers policy recommendations for how Argentina’s new president Mauricio Macri can help Latin America’s third-largest economy move toward more open markets and greater financial stability. A must for macroeconomists!
ONE Campaign co-founder Jamie Drummond joins CGD’s director of global health Amanda Glassman to launch a major new CGD book that chronicles a global health revolution across the world in the past 15 years. From vaccination campaigns against Meningitis A across Africa to universal health coverage in Thailand to social protection cash transfers in Kenya, Millions Saved helps us understand what works in global health and why. In his foreword, Bill Gates says Millions Saved gives readers “a clearer sense of what the world has learned about fighting some of our biggest health challenges — and how we can use that knowledge to save even more lives.” Health leaders from Kenya and Ethiopia will also join us to recount their experiences on the ground. Former president of the African Development Bank Donald Kaberuka (now also a CGD distinguished visiting fellow) discusses Africa’s energy needs at the launch of our new report More Than A Lightbulb. Todd Moss, CGD senior fellow and co-chair of our Energy Access Targets Working Group, will explain why the current UN definition of modern energy access — enough electricity to power a single lightbulb for five hours a day and charge a mobile phone — is too little to help countries meet development and economic goals. Also joining the discussion will be Katherine Steel, deputy coordinator (acting) of USAID Power Africa.
UNDP Administrator Helen Clark gives the keynote address as CGD teams up with Publish What You Fund to discuss transparency and development and to reveal the results of PWYF’s 2016 Aid Transparency Index, the leading global measure of aid transparency, with CEO Rupert Simons. CGD senior fellow Charles Kenny will discuss his forthcoming work on corruption and transparency, including proposals for governments to publish their procurement contracts. MCC’s deputy CEO Nancy Lee will discuss one US agency’s efforts and ambitions to be more transparent.
To mark EBRD’s 25th anniversary — and our 15th — CGD hosts the president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Sir Suma Chakrabarti, for a major policy speech on the future for multilateral development banks in a changing world. How should MDBs including the EBRD respond to shifting global dynamics and the imperatives of the SDGs? CGD president Nancy Birdsall, co-chair of our own High Level Panel on the Future of Multilateral Development banking, will be asking the questions. The EBRD will host a reception afterwards to celebrate the opening of its new Washington DC office.
