Request for Comments: USG Paper on Research & Innovation

May 22, 2013

The US Global Health Initiative (GHI) includes “the promotion of research and innovation” among the seven fundamental principles used to guide its global health efforts.  But how is this principle reflected in US government global health programs?

A new principle paper, authored by an interagency team from USAID,  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institute for Health (NIH), summarizes the US government’s position on promoting R&I in global health, and provides guidance to missions on how to successfully support R&I in the field and tap into technical support in USG Agency Headquarters.

Here at CGD, we regularly highlight the importance of R&I to guide policy, practice and strategy decisions in global health (see our thoughts on developing enabling environments for innovation here; and on establishing effective knowledge management systems here).  This is increasingly important as donors seek to get more health for the money they invest in global health.   So we’re pleased to see the US government take concrete steps to integrate these objectives into their programs and are eager to help them build on these efforts.

We invite you to comment on the consultation draft by Friday, June 7. The draft report can be found here  – please provide your thoughts and feedback in the comments section below or email them to globalhealthpolicy@cgdev.org. With input gathered during this consultation period, the R&I Principle Paper will be finalized and made public later this year.
