Alarm in America’s Tech Sector (U.S. News & World Report)

Uncertainty over U.S. immigration policy since President Donald Trump's election has likely had a negative effect on hiring immigrants in the technology industry, according to a new report from staffing firm Hired.

U.S. companies are less interested in hiring foreign workers than they were in 2016, while American interest in working overseas has slightly decreased, according to Hired data on nearly 175,000 interview requests and job offers facilitated through the global platform.

There were 6.9 million workers in the U.S. tech industry in 2016, up from 6.7 million in 2015, according to CompTIA, a top IT trade association. Unemployment is lower, and the average tech sector salary of $108,900 is more than double the average annual wage across all U.S. industries...

Most studies suggest the benefits of immigration outweigh the costs. In 2010, American workers collectively gained $431 million as a direct result of the H-1B program, a recent study from the Center for Global Development found. And more than half of billion-dollar startups in the U.S. were founded by immigrants.
