Jonah Busch, a research fellow at the Center for Global Development, has studied the potential for biodiversity credits to enter a REDD+ system that both promotes the diversity of species and slows the development of climate change (ClimateWire, Nov. 21, 2012).
Although some studies indicate that buyers of REDD+ credits on the voluntary carbon market would be more willing to purchase credits that ensured biodiversity protection, other experts have found that credits for biodiversity make no difference in shaping a buyer's incentive. Still, the study indicates that preserving old-growth forests is critical for maintaining plant species.
"From a biodiversity standpoint, this study provides even more evidence of the urgency of conserving remaining tropical forests relative to regrowing forests after they have been destroyed," Busch said.
